Department of Pathology

The department of Pathology is one of the oldest Departments of Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute which was created in 1954. Dr. Hans F. Smetana, Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Washington, DC, U.S.A., was instrumental in putting the department on a firm footing. The main activities of the department include providing diagnostic services and teaching. Diagnostic services in histopathology, cytopathology and hematology are provided to patients of Clinical Research Centre, Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute. Teaching of pathology of lung diseases to postgraduate students of MD Pulmonary Medicine and DTCD is done via lectures and clinicopathological conferences. Dr Ritu Kulshrestha joined the department in 2005 and further established new laboratories with the latest molecular pathology techniques. In 2006, the Department was moved to 6th floor and underwent complete upgradation. Over the years, the department has worked in close collaboration with the clinical and biomedical scientists of the Institute to further the cause of research in chest diseases. The Department continues its efforts to enhance its research and clinical output using molecular diagnostic techniques. The molecular pathology laboratory was started in 2009.
 

Since 2007, the department has regularly conducted Workshops, National Conferences, and two International Conferences on different aspects of respiratory diseases. In 2008, the Pulmonary Pathology Society of India was registered with Headquarters at Department of Pathology, V.P. Chest Institute.
