About the Department

 

The Department of Clinical Biochemistry was separated from the Department of Biochemistry in 1972 for providing routine and specialized clinical biochemistry investigation to the patients. Dr. S. P. Chopra, Reader joined the Department of Clinical Biochemistry on 21.08.1970 and was retired on 05.09.1999. All the tests were done then by the manual methods and kits using colorimeter.

 

Dr. Vishwajeet Rohil joined the Department of Clinical Biochemistry in 2001 and started research and teaching in addition to the supervision of the routine and specialized clinical biochemistry investigations which are being provided to the OPD patients as well as to the patients admitted at the Viswanathan Chest Hospital.  All the tests are now being done on Fully Automated Autoanalyzers. The main activities of the Department of Clinical Biochemistry has been

i). Diagnostics,

ii).Research,

iii). Teaching and

iv). Training.

 

 

DIAGNOSTIC SERVICES:

 

Diagnostic services are being provided to the indoor and outdoor patients. All the Clinical biochemistry Investigations are being done under the supervision and able guidance of Dr. Vishwajeet Rohil and all the patient’s samples are analyzed by the Fully Automated Autoanalyzers: BECKMAN Coulter Synhron CX-5 PRO and Alfa Wassermann Autoanalyzers. Recently we have installed a new Autoanalyzer Trivitron, Nano Lab 240 in place of Alfa Wassermann.

 

The following parameters are being done in blood and pleural fluid samples of the patients:

Serum Electrolytes : S. Na+ , S. K+ , S. Cl- , S. Ca++  and 

Pleural Fluid biochemical analysis including

 Pl. Fluid Total Protein, Pl. Fluid Albumin, Pl. Fluid Glucose.

Major areas of Research:

 

1. Cytogenetic studies – Micronuclei, Apoptosis, Cancer biomarkers
 

2. Chemoprevention of Genotoxicity by various Photochemicals and their synthetic analogues.
 

3. Study of Carcinogenesis at Molecular level in animal tumour model [Ehrlich Ascites Tumour Cell Line (EAT) in mice] and Human Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer A549 Cell Line [NSCLC, lung adenocarcinoma Cell line].

 

4. Study the role of Epigenetic modulation in Lung Carcinogenesis due to Histone Hyperacetylation by an Enzymatic Acetyl CoA Independent Novel Mechanism using Calreticulin Transacetylase catalyzed modification of functional protein Histone by various Polyphenol acetates and HDAC inhibitors in an effort to identify specific molecular targets and target oriented candidate drug or drug combinations for treating lung cancer.

 

5. Study of the molecular mechanism of development of COPD in Smokers by studying various Metalloproteinases viz., MMP1, MMP9, MMP12 and ADAM33 genes and gene product proteins and identification of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) in the genes encoding various metalloproteinases linked to COPD susceptibility in smokers. And to the correlation between the SNPs, gene products, smokingand COPD.    

 

6. Study the correlation between the activity of Adam 33 Gene Protein with Oxidative Stress In Asthma.
